It grapples with some big ideas. It also panders to the Alien geeks who want a few moments of Fucking Hell Did You See That?! Stunning visuals for sure. A helping of unnecessary Hollywood scripting daftness.

I was a bit disappointed, to be honest. MINOR SPOILERS FOLLOW.
Hospital white ship, crewed by slacker captain, English android, some blue collar engineers and a feisty brunette, follows alien signal to windswept world, and shadowy corporate manouevering means that android lets biohorrors on board. Brunette runs around in her underwear, chased by aliens. Hang on, wasn't that Alien? I was amazed Ridley Scott had the self discipline not to include a cat and a self destruct sequence. Don't even get me started on the caesarian by auto-doc sequence...
The stuff with the Space Jockeys/Engineers was interesting, the old man searching for the elixir of life, the Christian scientist trying to reconcile her science and her faith, the android as a substitute son for the old man after his daughter had become estranged, all good ideas, but it all got a bit drowned in predictable slasher movie stuff. WTF was it with the squids? Anyway, the CGI was amazing, the visuals were really impressive, but then that seems to be all Hollywood can do these days. Big empty blockbusters. Still, it helped me avoid the Jubliee, so that was a good thing.
I know movie scientists are dumb, but you'd think they'd have enough sense not to take their helmets off in a possibly alien biocontaminated environment just because the air has enough oxygen to breathe, wouldn't you? And show a bit more curiosity. "Hey, what's this black gunk that stays liquid at -12 degrees?" "Dunno. Probably not important..." _________________

This also parallels Alien. "Hey, look- the corpse of an obviously intelligent extraterrestrial being at what appears to be some kind of control interface for a giant alien space ship, and the victim of a violent death... I'm gonna get a closer-"
Don't mean to be a gravedigger but I was reading through and just had to say this movie let me down too. Apparently there may be a sequel. Let's hope. Because this movie simply does not work as a standalone.
