Hey all. New to Nexus Clash, arriving on a slowboat from Shartak Island where I was once a very poor defender of Durham.

Been lurking and reading around on a few things and was wondering how Mystic Mail works. Is it meant to be an active soak for a raider to "wear" for x ticks, or is it a passive soak for a defender to have on for 20 ticks (versus 20 attacks)?

Active buff. It won't flare up to save you while you're offline.

However, if you act, a tick goes down. If the AP tick fires, a tick goes down. And since it's an armor buff (like an Invulnerability potion), it ticks down if you're attacked.

So if you act, say search for 1 AP, it will become active with 19 more ticks left, then go off? Okay, so sadly not useful for stacking soaks. Had been hoping to make a fairly soaky feral NC.

One other question: if I buffed another player, in passing, with Mystic Mail, once they began moving the tick countdown would begin, meaning if they moved 20 squares, buff ends? So this is clearly an on the spot raider buff?

Yes, each action you take will wear it down, and it's best in raid/ live combat situations. Note that you can only cast it on other people if you take this skill, which requires you to be an Advocate.

Note that the duration *does* stack, so you can cast it several times so it lasts longer while you're asleep.

An interesting bit of information that you haven't really asked for is that the soak from Mystic Mail (+5 to mundane) does not stack with mundane/innate armor (craftable in factories), as far as I can tell from the wiki:

Mystic Mail wrote:
While under the effect of Mystic Mail, the character is treated as though wearing armor that grants 5 soak against Piercing, Slashing, and Impact damage types.

Armor stacking wrote:
When multiple pieces of armor are equipped, only the highest soak for each damage type applies.

Suit of Military Encounter Armor wrote:
2 Impact, 5 Piercing, 3 Slashing (4 Impact, 7 Piercing, 5 Slashing when pristine), weighs 25

While that from Mystic Shield (+2 to all) does stack with all kinds of armor.

Mystic Shield wrote:
While under the effect of Mystic Shield, the character gains +2 soak against all attacks.

Thus, if you have access to a factional crafter, they can make you mundane armor that will soak better than anything Mystic Mail can ever give you (though rather heavier, but you could spend the CP on Strength, that boosts your weight limit). Go Mystic Shield if you must pseudotank (go up against pets, that is), since most pets do non-mundane damage primarily.

At 1 MP + 1 AP a cast (once you have got a spellgem, an item that lets you 'store' a spell to unleash it later at reduced cost and damage), Mystic Shield/even Mystic Mail can be very useful in a raid situation (both in the offense and defense).

-------------

Finally, everyone seems to be missing that, lol, but welcome to Nexus Clash! The Breath (3.5) has just started, so you should have ample time to acquaint yourself with pretty much everything (and get a maxxed character or ten). Ask for help whenever you need to (though I'd recommend joining a faction so you can experience a much more forgiving gameplay), and have fun!

Much thanks, the information is most definitely helpful. Currently just sorting through the sea of mechanics.

I had initially thought the base soak from tattoo of resistance plus the Adamant Kinship soak boost would go nicely with the mystic spells. But yeah, that would be pretty overpowered, were it so.

Again, thanks for the help and the welcome!

The important bit that should be considered when dealing with armour is the + sign. Mystic Mail actually doesn't provide +5 to mundane soaks, only 5. As Aidan correctly interpreted, Mystic Mail doesn't stack with mundane armours, and it doesn't with most innate armours either. If you are going through with the NC plan and get Tattoo of Resistance, that means you will get 3 innate soak to mundane types (in addition to pretty decent elemental, exotic and aligned soaks across the board), which will be overridden by Mystic Mail and/or pristine mundane armour (again, as pointed out by Aidan, this last one would be the more efficient, if heavy, option). When your character has several values that don't have a + sign, the highest one in each type is the one that counts.

Check the GUWAST, and compare the armours you think you could afford to get. In order to ramp up soaks, you will want to look for as many + signs as possible: Mystic Shield (+2 for 20 ticks), Adamant Kinship bonus (+3 permanent), Invulnerability potions (+several values for 25 ticks) and painkillers (+1 for 6 minutes) are available to most classes. ALL the +soak stack with one another and your highest armour. Some other classes are able to get more +soak via their skills - Nexus Champions don't get that many options by virtue of being a NC.

Also, welcome back :P

Resistance, AK bonus and Mystic Shield do stack, giving you +5 over the normal values of Resistance. If you also cast Mystic Mail, your mundane types would change to 5 (from a previous 3), +5 giving you a total of 10.

He is getting Tattoo of Strength AND Strength, which is an extra 40 inventory points to store the armor in. The heaviest, and arguably best set of armor AKA Military Encounter Armor is 25 weight and soaks 4, 7, 5 when pristine. Police Riot Armor + Leather Cuirass is 26 weight, and soaks 6, 5, 6.

Of course, maintaining armor is somewhat painful >.< Especially since you are a bowyer and not a smith. However, if you are willing to scavenge, there are lots of mastersmiths around who will happily craft/repair your armor for you (like Fairy Wink ).

Oooh, yeah, I had totally not considered the weight limit. My personal preference is to go for Police Riot + Leather Cuirass, but for a feral Military Encounter may be easier to maintain (plus high piercing soak means neutralising both bowmen and gunmen, among other things).

Can suits of military encounter armor even be found in this breath? They're definitely craftable, sure, but the wiki says the only place to search for them is a (forgotten) military base. Unless I'm missing something, there are none of those in Laurentia.
