So I had a Can of Preserved Meat and instead of setting it up, I accidentally stuffed it into the endless mass of clothing that is a fac safe. You wedged the food underneath something heavy, didn't you? This caused the can to squish. When you took it out, it repaired itself, because it was SPAM inside, and SPAM is magic meat.
Food and alcohol *have* quality, like weapons do. Have you noticed that deaths will sometimes remove some or several of your food items? It's because of this. They have a hidden quality condition and they will degrade with deaths (and sometimes break through other means as well); I believe this is 100% intended behaviour. You can't "repair" them, of course, and you will be able to see their condition while they are in a faction safe (footlockers too, perhaps, I've never put food in my footlocker).
