This is for LS, but could be adapted to any other class.
Concept:
For a large MP/AP cost, summons 3-4 of a pet. You cannot have more than a maximum of 3-4 out. These pets have two mechanics:
1. Pets start out with low stats. Whenever any one pet dies to enemy damage, the remaining ones get stronger (+damage/+health). Maybe even stronger effects apply to the last one standing (healed up to full, gains +defence etc).
2. If the LS takes lethal damage, that damage is transferred to one of these pets instead (maybe increase it by 2x or 3x for balance).
For instance a LS with 5 HP takes 20 damage, LS's HP is reduced to 1, and one of the (name WIP) pets takes 16x2=32 damage.
Possible names:

Char-aina

There is a B5 feature that I think satisfies some of the key elements of this suggestion, namely:
1. Lightspeaker pet
2. Limited in number
3. Has a special function beyond just combat
4. Functions include a means to defend its master besides just combat
