I know Planar Protection stops Planar Damage, but not damage from walking in lava. This is not surprising.

Does flying allow you to avoid this damage? What about Wisp Form (Conduit, 30CP) or Ghostwalk (Doom Howler, 30CP)?

Or better yet, what are the fundamental rules that dictate damage when on these kinds of blocks (i.e. lava and the equivalents, because I assume Hallowed Ground is a kind of holy anti-lava)?

Testing confirms that flying, Ghostwalk, bat form and Wisp Form all prevent this damage.

In B3.5 the only tiles that can deal damage are Lava, Searing River, Lake of Fire and Hallowed Ground. All of them should always deal damage unless the character is of the class from that plane (Angels for Hallowed Ground, demons for the rest), has a greater or lesser flight skill active, or is immune to the damage type dealt by the tile (Holy for Hallowed Ground, fire for the rest). Planar Protection should not negate the damage from any of these tile types.

In Breath 4, the code rebuild will allow us to add a much greater variety of terrain obstacles, hazards, benefits and ways to interact with your surroundings, so expect this sort of thing to matter a lot (but also be more transparent) in the future.

Thanks, it's exactly what I wanted to hear. The rules make sense! Yay!
