Sorry this one took so long to get out folks! Shoutout to Sohdbrimks who pinged me literally every day till this was done, what a hero. Say thanks to Bag of XP next time you eviscerate him.

First off, class feature!

Here we see what we’ve settled on as the Paladin’s gimmick, ways to use Morality! The class feature gives some stats for being at higher morality and also a strong incentive to spend morality with a very strong regeneration ability. And with that bonus soak, I’m sure your next question is about:

DA is only losing 1 point of soak across the board, so combo’d with Divine Investiture, you are getting -1 / 0 / +1 at 20-29 / 30-39 / 40 Morality. Pretty fair IMO, considering that with careful planning you can maintain 40 MO even with skill use…or can you?

Paladin gets a bit less than Pariah/Myrmidon, but it’s a passive without any sort of activation tricks and is in line with the CP spent. Also Paladin gets some pretty nice defenses (as is tradition) when the other classes don’t. The Paladin does have to be a bit careful with target selection, but you were going after demons anyway. You don’t really want anymore damage anyway... right?

Please say no, it's gonna be complicated.

In Breath 5, hits from an attack with supplemental damage is applied as follows:

STEP 1: Supplemental damage is dealt to the target. If the target is not completely immune to the supplemental damage type, the amount of soak by which the target's defenses reduce the supplemental damage (i.e., soak and damage reduction) is tracked as the target's "effective soak" to that damage.

STEP 2: Damage from the "primary" attack is dealt to the target. If the target is not completely immune to the primary damage type, and if the target has a soak against that damage type greater than 1, then that soak is reduced by an amount equal to the "effective soak" against the supplemental damage, but cannot fall below zero.

The primary attack damage is dealt based on this newly-reduced soak, though damage reduction against the primary attack that the target may possess still applies.

SCENARIO A: The target possesses 6 soak against all attacks but has no damage resistance. The supplemental fire damage is applied first, 6 damage versus 6 soak. The damage is soaked down to 1 point of damage (since damage cannot fall below 1), meaning the effective soak against the fire damage was 5. When the primary attack is applied, the 6 soak is reduced by 5 (the effective soak vs supplemental) to 1 soak. The 10 slashing damage is applied versus 1 point of remaining soak - so the attack deals 9 slashing and 1 fire damage (a total of 10 points of damage).

Under the B4 supplemental paradigm, this attack would have dealt 4 slashing and 1 fire

SCENARIO B: The target possesses 4 soak verus fire and 2 soak versus slashing. The supplemental fire damage is applied first, 6 damage versus 4 soak. The damage is soaked down to 2 points, meaning the effective soak against the fire damage was 4. When the primary attack is applied the 2 soak is reduced by 4 (but cannot go below 0) to 0 soak. The 10 slashing damage is applied versus the remaining soak, so the attack deals 10 slashing and 2 fire damage (a total of 12 points of damage).

Under the B4 supplemental paradigm, this attack would have dealt 8 slashing and 2 fire.

SCENARIO C: The target possesses 25% damage resistance versus slashing and fire and 4 soak versus slashing and fire. The supplemental fire damage is applied first, 6 damage versus 4 soak. The damage is reduced to 2 points by soak and then multiplied by 0.75 due to damage resistance, becoming 1.5 points which is rounded down to 1. The "effective soak" against fire was 5 points. When the primary attack is applied, the 4 soak is reduced by 5 (but not below zero) so the 10 damage is applied versus 0 soak. This 10 points of damage is then multiplied by 0.75 for a result of 7.5 points, rounded down to 7 - so the attack deals 7 slashing and 1 fire damage (a total of 8 points of damage).

Under the B4 supplemental paradigm, this attack would have dealt 4 slashing and 1 fire damage.

SCENARIO D: The target possesses 25% damage resistance vs slashing and fire, 6 soak vs slashing. The supplemental fire damage is applied first, 6 damage multiplied by 0.75 due to damage resistance, becoming 4.5 points which is rounded down to 4. The "effective soak" against fire was 2 points. When the primary attack is applied, the 6 soak is reduced by 2 so the 10 damage is applied versus 4 soak. The remaining 6 points of damage is then multiplied by 0.75 for a result of 4.5 points, rounded down to 4 - so the attack deals 4 slashing and 4 fire damage (a total of 8 points of damage).

Under the B4 supplemental paradigm, this attack would have dealt 3 slashing and 4 fire damage.


That’s a lot to digest! I’m sure there will be questions and feel free to pose additional scenarios and we can all do some math together. The upshot of this change is that tracking "effective soak" generally means that adding supplemental damage to an attack is much better than B4.

With that in mind, the values for supplemental damage currently in the game will be changing drastically as the mechanic is no longer completely gimped by average amounts of soak, while extremely effective vs people with no soak (mortals).

Oh also it was teased in our implemented suggestion forum, but I'm not sure if everyone saw it.

In B5 the max AP for all characters, regardless of level, is 72. The regeneration rate is not changing.
